As someone who’s hosted many White Elephant gift exchanges, I’m here to break down everything you need to know — from what the game is, to how to host a party everyone will love, how to pick the most-stolen gift, and how to leave with the one you actually want. Let’s get into it!

White Elephant Gift Exchange 101

A White Elephant gift exchange is a holiday favorite — part game, part gift swap, and all about the laughs. But have you ever wondered why it’s called “White Elephant” or what the difference is between that, Dirty Santa, and Yankee Swap? Let’s clear it up!

What is a White Elephant Gift Exchange?

A White Elephant gift exchange is a fun and – if done right – a hilarious holiday party game where guests bring wrapped gifts that are weirdly lovable and unexpectedly awesome. To play the game, each round participants take turns selecting an unopened gift or “stealing” a previously opened gift from each other.

The goal? To stir up laughs, make memories, and fuel good-natured competition! ANNNNDDD…if you are competitive like me, it is to leave with the best gift of the night. Let’s Go!

Why is it called a White Elephant Gift Exchange?

The term “white elephant” is thought to come from an old legend about the King of Siam (modern-day Thailand) gifting a White Elephant to people who displeased him. White (albino) elephants were considered sacred and rare, and owning one was seen as a sign of prestige.

But because these elephants were so revered, they couldn’t be used for work — and they were very expensive to care for. So if the king wanted to punish someone subtly, he would gift them a white elephant. On the surface, it looked like a great honor — but in reality, it was a burdensome, high-maintenance gift that the recipient couldn’t refuse or get rid of.

The modern White Elephant gift exchange plays on this idea — the gifts are unexpected yet strangely irresistible. But unlike ancient Siam, you actually want to end up with a good one!

What is the Difference between White Elephant, Dirty Santa, and Yankee Swap?

Same name, same game? Let’s look at the different names you may hear this gift-swapping game referred to and how they differ.

WHITE ELEPHANT gift exchange tends to be funny, quirky, novelty gifts. A joke gift that becomes legend or a gift that is outrageous, yet oddly practical. Great for Kids and adults.

DIRTY SANTA is played the same way as White Elephant; it’s just the gifts tend to be a little more taboo, inappropriate, or embarrassing. Best for an adult crowd

YANKEE SWAP is the same game as White Elephant, but the gifts can be silly, useful, or somewhere in between. Think funny, but everyone wants it or something unexpectedly appealing. The focus here is on gifts that would be truly a “good gift”.

White Elephant Gift Exchange Rules

Whether it’s your first time playing or you just need a refresher, here’s how to play the classic White Elephant gift exchange game — with all the fun, strategy, and gift-swapping chaos included!

I have included the Rules below in one column, and in the other column, I have included notes about how we do it

Step 1: Everyone Brings a Wrapped Gift

HOW IT WORKS

  • Set a price limit ahead of time and decide if you will allow re-gifts.
  • Gifts can be funny, useful, quirky, or impractical
  • All gifts should be wrapped and anonymous
  • If you want, choose a theme.

THEME IDEAS
– All Things Cozy: Think blankets, fuzzy socks, candles, hot cocoa kits, or anything that screams “holiday hibernation.
– Holiday Spirits: Boozy gifts, cocktail kits, wine-themed items, or funny barware.
– Strictly Christmas: Gifts to help you deck your halls.

HERE’S WHAT WE DO

  • We set a $25 price limit AND allow re-gifting as long as the regifted item is valued at $25 or more.

Step 2: Draw Numbers to Determine the Order

HOW TO PLAY

  • When you are ready to begin, each player draws a number from a hat
  • This number determines the order people pick gifts.
  • Player #1 goes first, and the game continues in numeric order.

HERE’S WHAT WE DO

  • We use a Santa hat to draw numbers.

Step 3: Gift Picking Time!

HOW TO PLAY

On your turn, you can do one of two things:

  1. Pick a new gift from the pile and open it for everyone to see.
  2. Steal a gift that someone else has already opened.

HERE’S WHAT WE DO

  • We have everyone who has an open gift available for a steal hold their gift up so it is easy to see.

Step 4: Let the Stealing Begin

HOW TO PLAY

  • If your gift gets stolen, you can:
    • Steal from someone else
    • Or open a new gift
  • You CAN’T immediately steal back the gift that was just taken from you. You have to wait for the next round.
  • You also can’t steal a gift that was already stolen in that round.

STEALING RULES
– A gift can only be stolen a maximum of 2–3 times.
– Once a gift hits that limit, it’s “locked” and can’t be stolen again.
– A gift can’t be stolen more than once per round.

HERE’S WHAT WE DO

  • We keep track of which gifts were stolen, how many times, and in which round. This way, we know when a gift is “locked”.

Step 5: The Final Turn with an Optional Twist

HOW TO PLAY

  • When the last player goes, if they choose to steal, the game continues until no one else wants to steal and someone opts to open the last unopened gift.
  • Once the last unopened gift is opened, the game is over.
  • Optional Twist- Once the last round is over, meaning there are no more unopened gifts and no more players to go, you can give Player #1 one last chance at the end to steal any unlocked gift.
  • If they do, that starts one more round of stealing.

HERE’S WHAT WE DO

  • We choose NOT to play with the optional twist of letting Player #1 steal any available gift. It is a great option if you have a few people and want the game to continue longer.

Hosting Tips to make it the Best White Elephant Gift Exchange Ever

📍TIP 1 – SET GIFT PARAMETERS: A few weeks before the party, be sure to communicate the gift price range, if re-gifts are allowed, and the gift theme (if you choose to have one). This information could be included in the holiday party invite.

📍TIP 2 – PRE-PARTY PREP: Before the gift exchange/party, print and cut your numbers. Have more numbers than you think you will need. This way, you don’t have to print more if there are more participants than you anticipated.

📍TIP 3 – DESIGNATED GIFT DROP SPOT: Have a clear and separate space for guests to drop off the gifts. Before the game begins, you will need to count to make sure the number of participants matches the number of gifts. This is easier to do if all the gifts are placed in a designated area.

📍TIP 4 – SET THE SCENE: Pick a cozy and festive space where everyone can sit facing each other. The more connected and huddled in you feel, the more fun the game is. Maybe you gather around your Christmas tree with a fire burning and soft Christmas music playing in the background. Drink in hand, ready to make merry.

📍TIP 5THE GAME HOST MAKES IT OR BREAKS IT: The right Game Host can take this gift swap and turn it into one of the most loved and memorable traditions, full of laughter and precious memories. Pick a Game Host who is funny, witty, charming, and comfortable talking in front of people.

📍TIP 6 – GAME HOST PACING: One of the most important roles of the Game Host is pacing. It is your job to keep the game moving along, but also not to rush each round. Keep track of who is up next and help them decide if they will open a new gift or steal from someone else. It’s an art to balance not rushing the game with ensuring that it doesn’t take so long that people start getting fidgety and bored.

📍TIP 7 – GAME HOST SPECIAL SAUCE: This is the secret sauce to hosting a White Elephant Gift Exchange that will be talked about for years to come and have guests asking, “Are we doing this again next year?!”.

Each round after the Game Host calls the next number, but before that person makes a pick (new gift or steal), the Game Host is going to quickly review each unwrapped gift that is still available (not “locked”). This is where that wit, humor, and charm come in. Crack jokes about the gifts available. Highlight the “hot items” and make light of the…erm…not so hot items. Bring some competitiveness and “what will they choose” intensity to the game. All the while keeping in mind the pacing, a little more commentary to slow the game down, and less to speed it up.

Good Gifts for White Elephant Gift Exchange

From Crook to Cook: Snoop Dog Cook Book

Snoop Dog in your kitchen. Need I say more

Hamilton Beach Dual Breakfast Sandwich Maker

I don’t know why this was such a big hit. Maybe because it’s so weirdly awesome, but the fact is, this was one of the most stolen and talked about gifts. It also comes in a single.

Snoop on the Stoop Christmas Elf

A Snoop Dog Christmas Elf? Yes please! Imagine elf on the shelf but with a little something extra. This was a huge hit.

Pac-Man and Ghosts Light

I think the nostalgia this lamp evoked is what made it such a big hit.

Alcohol – Any Type

Alcohol is another one of those gifts that is in high demand and gets stolen frequently. The funnier, nostalgic, or popular the better.

Lottery Scratchers

Scratchers are always a big hit.

I Pee In Pools Retro Style Trucker Hat

This hat was hilarious when it was opened, so many laughs, and it was stolen until it was locked.

Beer Belly Fanny Pack

It was an immediate lol moment when this was opened. This was stolen the max number of times. The gifter loaded it up with scratchers as well, so it made the gift that much more appealing.

How to Win in a White Elephant Gift Exchange

Sure, sure — everyone’s a winner at a White Elephant gift exchange because you’re spending time with friends and family, making memories, blah blah blah. We get it. Togetherness is magical and all that.

But let’s be real: how do you actually walk away with a gift you don’t immediately re-gift or “accidentally” leave behind? Is it even possible to leave with something good?

Heck yes, it is. And I’m about to break down how.

Now listen — I’m not exactly proud of this next part. It taps into my slightly overcompetitive holiday spirit. The strategy I’m about to share might live somewhere in the morally gray area of Christmas party etiquette… but let’s just say, if you use it right, your chances of scoring a solid gift go way, way up.

Let’s get into it.

To Begin: Bring a Gift Everyone Will Want

This is your foundation.
The key to winning often starts before the game even begins.

Bring something people will fight over. Trust me — a gift that screams “hot item” gives you more control in the later rounds.

Next: Hope for a Middle Number

Unless you play with the Optional Twist, where Player #1 gets one last chance at the end to steal any unlocked gift. The middle of the pack is the sweet spot.

  • You’ve seen a few gifts opened
  • You still have decent pick options
  • You can play smart with steals

Did you get stuck drawing first or last? Oof.
It’s not game over, but you’re going to need some backup plans.

Don’t worry — I’ve got you covered.

Lastly: Choose Your Gift Strategy

Here are the four main strategies I’ve used (with varying degrees of shame and success):

🥇 Best Bet Strategy

Goal: Lock in a gift you love — fast.

If there’s a gift already opened that you want, and it only has one steal left, grab it. That gift is about to be “locked,” and you’re out of the game with something great.

No risk. No drama. Just a win.

🥈Pretty Solid Strategy 1: The Bait Gift

Goal: Use your own gift to trigger a steal.

Open your own gift (the one you intentionally brought to be a crowd favorite). Once someone inevitably steals it from you, you now have options to execute Best Bet or Pretty Solid Strategy 2.

🥉Pretty Solid Strategy 2: Strategic Steal

Goal: Get a good gift and bait a future steal.

Steal something that’s already popular and has been stolen once. You’re gambling that someone else will steal it from you — and when they do, boom — you jump to Best Bet or try another high-level steal.

🙏 Let Jesus Take the Wheel Strategy

Goal: Fake it ’til you make it.

If you’re stuck picking an unopened gift that’s not yours, own it. Open it with over-the-top excitement. Gush. Pretend it’s the greatest thing you’ve ever unwrapped.

Why? You’re creating artificial demand.
If someone believes you love that gift, they might steal it — giving you another chance to pivot to a better strategy.

🎉 In Conclusion

Winning at White Elephant isn’t just luck — it’s strategy, confidence, and just the right amount of holiday mischief.

Whether you’re here to stir the pot or walk away with a cozy throw blanket and a smug smile, play smart and have fun doing it.

Now go forth and conquer your gift exchange like the festive mastermind you are. 🎄
